Ethnocultural minorities. Documented histories. Gypsies in Romania (1919-1944)
Ethnocultural minorities. Documented histories. Gypsies in Romania (1919-1944) The collection of documents on the Gypsies in Romania (1919-1944)* covers a much-needed area that is often considered insufficiently explored. Organized in a timely manner, the historical testimonies reveal two important moments of this ethnic group: the efforts to create an association of all Roma in Romania and a less fortunate and tragic moment, namely the deportation of the Roma population - with all its suffering and losses - in the Transdnister region during the regime of Ion Antonescu. The volume makes available to the public, in a compact form, a series of 365 documents and several eyewitness accounts of Holocaust survivors, and also includes several maps and drawings that paint a true picture of the history of this ethnic group. For this volume, extensive use was made of the materials indexed by the Romanian National Archives, in particular the archives of the General Directorate of Police, the General Directorate of Gendarmerie, the Police Prefecture in Bucharest and other national institutions.
